Guide to Mowing Turf Grasses

mowing guide turf grasses Dallas Fort Worth

Following are some basic guidelines for mowing turf grasses in the DFW area. Individual specifics will vary, and you should always be ready to modify your schedule based on local conditions.

The frequency and height of your mowing will change throughout the year as temperatures and growth vary. You will want to set your mower lowest for the first mow of the spring (only 1 notch lower for St. Augustine), and progressively higher as the year goes on.

After the first mow of the season, your goal is to cut 1/3rd of the grass blades. Cutting more than a third of the grass blades may damage your lawn, depending on the type of turf.  For example: If your lawn is 3 inches high, cut off 1 inch.

Mower Maintenance:

Proper mower maintenance is a key aspect of keeping a uniform, vibrant, and lush lawn.

  • Clean the undercarriage of your mower after each mow.
  • Sharpen the blade at the beginning and midway through each season.
  • Do not mow the lawn while the grass is wet.
  • Mow different directions each week. This helps your grass to grow more vertical and promotes thickness.
  • Check the air pressure in all tires.

Spring / Fall Mowing:

  • Bermudagrass Height: 1.5” to 2.0”
  • St Augustine Height: 2.0” to 2.5”
  • Interval: 5-7 days
  • Clippings: Bag if weeds are present

Summer Mowing:

  • Bermudagrass Height: 2.0” to 2.5”
  • St Augustine Height: 2.5” to 4.0”
  • Interval: 4-6 days
  • Clippings: Bag if weeds are present
