No matter what state, county, or neighborhood you live in, all homeowners have one thing in common: weeds in their lawn and gardens. These undesirable plants find their way into any flower bed and are a nuisance for many reasons.
For one, they compete for survival amongst your existing plants (you know, the ones you carefully curated for your natural areas), often times draining them of their proper nutrients and water, wreaking havoc on their overall health.
Secondly, they grow exponentially faster than existing plants. This means they can easily overtake your beloved flower beds, all it takes is going away on vacation for a week, having a mix of sun and rain for several days, or just getting caught up in the busyness of everyday life.
Thirdly, they can eventually lead to you spending your valuable free time, continually tending to them each month.

If you’re ready to stop stressing over weeds invading your natural areas, then it’s time to consider hiring a professional to take care of this process for you!
Not sure what that process looks like? Follow along as we discuss what you can expect from a professional bed weed control service.
What Areas are Included for a Bed Weed Control Service?
Did you know that when you hire a professional to maintain your bed weeds, it includes more than just your natural areas?
That’s right, at Gecko Green our service includes all flower beds, rock beds, tree rings (mulched areas), and in between sidewalk paths!
Many people tend to forget about areas that aren’t just their flower beds, or they may scramble to clean up what others can only see from the road. Oftentimes this results in many of us neglecting bed weed areas in our back yards as well.
If you feel like you’re constantly playing “catch up” with your bed weeds, then it’s a good time to hire a trusted professional to take this burden away from you.
What to Expect When Your Hired Professional Arrives?
First and most importantly, your professional technician should be licensed and have experience when it comes to bed weeds.
They should arrive to your home driving a company vehicle (typically a pick-up truck), that hosts the equipment in the back.
Your professional should arrive in a company uniform, and more than likely will be wearing long rubber gloves, boots, and a backpack sprayer with a long-handled nozzle.
Depending on the time of year, they may also be using a hand spreader containing granular products.
For their initial visit, they will likely do a thorough walk through of the front and back yards. This allows them to see exactly what they are working with and make any notes necessary to reference going forward.
What Does the Application Process Look Like?
Weeds won’t take a season off, and neither should your hired bed weed professional! At Gecko Green, we administer applications throughout all four seasons.
You can expect to have six-bed weed control applications throughout the year, each application being approximately seven to eight weeks apart.
Depending on the time of year, the first two and last two applications will contain a selective pre-emergent herbicide. This herbicide is curated for each season and prevents weeds from germinating in the future months.
We also apply a selective post-emergent herbicide at each visit. This post-emergent herbicide will target existing weeds, to deter future growth, preventing further spreading.
The great thing about utilizing a professional for herbicide application is they have the training and experience to use the correct ratio of each one, along with applying the proper amount each time.
This saves you the headache and hassle of the process, along with not having to worry about proper storage for them as well.

What Can the Homeowner Do Between Visits?
The best part about hiring a professional to overtake this burden from you means there’s little to do on your end! At Gecko Green, we do not recommend our homeowners using a weed barrier (such as landscape fabric) as a weed deterrent.
Instead, we do recommend that you continue mulching these areas throughout the year. The best time to mulch is during the spring and fall seasons.
Make sure to have a thickness of 3 to 4 inches of mulch, this acts as a natural weed deterrent, eliminating the sun from accessing weeds which ultimately slows down the growth process, preventing them from spreading further.
How to Prepare for Your Bed Weed Control Service
Luckily, there is minimal work involved on the homeowner in order to prepare for this service.
In some cases, there may be weeds growing within a plant which prevents our technicians from safely spraying them during treatment. If so, they will leave recommendations for the homeowner to remove the weeds by hand.
Our technicians will also leave detailed notes when mulch needs to be touched up, when it’s time to re-mulch (as mentioned above), and watering instructions.
